🚨 The Group Chat Gone Wrong: An ELA Mystery

🚨 The Group Chat Gone Wrong: An ELA Mystery

Who moved the class project? 👀 Nobody knows. Everybody has a theory. And suddenly, your students are detectives.

This 4th–5th grade ELA worksheet turns reading comprehension into a mini mystery. Students read a fictional group chat, separate facts from inferences, identify what information is still missing, and decide which character they believe based on evidence.

Then comes the good part: the text-evidence check. Students evaluate different claims and decide whether each one is supported by the conversation, unsupported, or possible but in need of more evidence.

Finally, students write the missing message that solves the mystery.

🔎 What Students Practice

  • Reading comprehension
  • Making inferences
  • Finding text evidence
  • Distinguishing facts from assumptions
  • Evaluating claims
  • Supporting an answer with evidence
  • Creative writing
  • Critical thinking

It feels like a group-chat mystery, but underneath the fun, students are doing some serious reading work. 📚🕵🏽♀️

Perfect for: 4th–5th grade ELA, literacy centers, independent work, early finishers, homeschool, or a fun Friday activity when you want students thinking without hearing, “Do we have to do another worksheet?” 😅

Read the clues. Check the evidence. Solve the mystery. 🔎
